About the Candidate Barracks

The Candidate Barracks are designed to sleep 40 candidates, although, at a push, an extra 10 or so could be accommodated.

The barracks are partitioned into 10 rooms, each holding 4 beds. These rooms are enclosed, offering a certain amount of privacy for candidates. Each bed has it’s own chest and drawers for storage. There is a shelf on the wall above each chest of drawers on which candidates may place their books and nick knacks.

A main hallway runs down the centre of the barracks, with all bedrooms opening off it. There is a doorway at the far end leading to the Candidates bathing rooms. There are two of these, each with a series of 5 pools, sunken into the rock. Along one side of the rooms are smaller, raised bowls with looking glasses above, for washing hands and faces and arranging hair etc.

Near the doorway to the bathing rooms is a short corridor, running off to the left, off which open 5 small, private rooms. These rooms offer privacy to Candidates who wish to further their experience of physical relationships, or spend time with their partners. These rooms are kept locked, keys may be picked up from C'mar, and returned the next day.

Near the entrance to the Barracks there is a small notice board. On here are pinned the days’ chore group assignments, plus anything else of interest to the candidates. Notices of Gathers, anything which may affect the whole Weyr, your candidate will find it up on the board.

The barracks boasts it’s own small mess area, where candidates have their breakfast. They can choose to have their other meals there if they wish, providing they let the staff know beforehand, so avoiding the crush in the Dining Hall, and of course, fresh klah and juice are always available.

Next door, along the Weyrwall, in between the barracks entrance and the doorway to the lower caverns and the Dining Hall, is the Candidate Master’s office.

Situated near to the Lower Caverns, the barracks is close to the fenced off Feeding Grounds, where the Weyr keeps it’s herdbeasts and wherries for dragon consumption. This is no accident, for it falls to the candidates to muck out the beast enclosure.
