History of Brondir Weyr
To keep ourselves separate from Anne
McCaffrey's timeline, we have the following announcements. AIVAS was never
found and never will be, thread still falls and will continue to do so, there
were no long intervals.
11 turns before the start of the 9th Pass,
the Northern Weyrs were struggling to cope with the numbers of dragons and
riders. They were full to overflowing and, to ease the hardship people were
suffering as a result, the decision was taken by all the Weyrleaders to make
an exploration of the Southern Continent.
One of the exploratory parties stumbled across a long extinct volcanic
crater which, upon further investigation, was deemed suitable for
occupation. There were plenty of caves high up in the walls, which were
fine, with the minimum of modification, for weyrs, and on ground level,
there were fine big caverns which would make a splendid kitchen, dining
room, candidate dormitory and stores rooms.
The decision was taken to open up the Weyr for occupation to relieve the
pressure on the Northern Weyrs somewhat. Volunteers were asked for, and the
move south began. The new Weyr was named Brondir, after the rider who had
first discovered it, and very shortly it’s new occupants were settling
themselves into their new home, adjusting to their new surroundings, happily
stretching themselves in the space that now surrounded them.
Saien and Alyan were chosen to be the two gold riders to start the new Weyr,
with Alyan as Senior Weyrwoman until the first gold rose. Alyan’s gold
Jemaith rose first and was caught by bronze Dwenath. Although small, their
clutch had a gold egg, an excellent omen for the fledgling Weyr. This gold
egg hatched, and Trileth chose Tyla from the group of waiting candidates.
The clutch was healthy and flourished through Weyrling training. Saien chose
to leave Brondir 2 turns after the first class of weyrlings had graduated.
For the first half a decade, things went well for Brondir. The weyrfolk were
settled, their population growing, both by natural increase, and by new
arrivals from the north coming to take their chances in the south.
A Crafthall sprang up near the Weyr, named Seahaven. Various Crafts
made a place for themselves in the hall,
providing their goods and services to Weyr which housed and protected them.
Although mostly dedicated to sea crafts there existed a small presence from
all the northern craft halls within the walls of Seahaven.
The 9th pass began, Brondir coped well with the start of threadfall, only
having a small area to protect. It was during the second fall that disaster
struck, Jemaith was fatally scored, plummeting from the sky. The fall was
also fatal for Alyan. Her death, and her dragon’s exit between, was a huge
blow for Brondir. Especially as neither Jemaith of Trileth had produced more
gold eggs.
As the Junior Weyrwoman, Tyla took over after Alyan’s death, in shock at the
sudden loss of Alyan and Jemaith. She worked hard in her new role, trying
her best to keep the Weyr together as they all grieved their loss. Tyla only
just managed, in those early days, to keep up with all that was required of
her. However, after a while, things seemed to ease a little and she began,
very slowly, to feel a little more optimistic about life at Brondir again.
In her first flight as senior queen, Trileth was caught by bronze Darath,
making his rider, L’var, Weyrleader. Tyla and L’var made a strong team, if
young, and once again Brondir began to flourish. Sadly no clutch resulted
from Trileth and Darath’s first flight, the healers thought it was the
stress of losing Jemaith so suddenly which caused Trileth to produce no
clutch. A few months after Trileths
flight, Solandra and her gold Raylanth arrived during the autumn gather.
Barely a sevenday had passed before Raylanth was in the skys, crying her
challenge to Brondir's male dragons in flight. She chose brown Diarmith as
her mate, giving L'sen the rank of Weyrsecond despite his not showing up to
catch Landra as his prize. Shortly
after Raylanth clutched L'sen was involved in an accident during threadfall
and fell into a coma which lasted until half way through the hatching. On
his waking his dragon practically danced in joy.
After the hatching of Raylanths clutch at Brondir she was
called back to Southern Boll when her grandfather died. L'sen, though
recovering from his accident, maintained the rank of Weyrsecond. |
